This was a difficult book as I had only one course in economics and have delved no deeper than NPR since. Deined 21, Chris Leuchtenburg rated it liked it Shelves: President Nixon embracing Keynes and the left-wing President Clinton showing a fear of deficits and distrust of governments which would have delighted Hayek.
This book might help the reader of that stripe sort it out. But whereas Keynes surfed his wave of fame, Hayek quickly became alarmed at having inadvertently written a bestseller — “a very corrupting experience”, he decided.

I would recommend it, despite its obvious shortcomings most notably its unscholarly tone and keyness unabashed America-centrismas a pretty definned journalistic, chronologically narrated summary of the basic elements of “John Maynard”‘s and “Friedrich”‘s contributions to economics – and even more of their influence on the American and British political debate, on which this book largely focuses.
His account of the origins and early application of the competing theories is readable, intelligent, and even-handed. Which other economist could get a personal invite from Roosevelt to see him at the White House or have just about movern one of his articles from The Daily Mail and The Times published in serial form and later collected into best-selling works?

I think it is actually more a book of the effects of the two than an economics view on their actual thoughts. It’s not easy going, rather dense in some sections actually, but Wapshott effectively uses the human dimensions of the story to keep it moving.
The clash is also complicated by the fact that Keynes and Hayek had such different perspectives on what made the economy tick. clsah

This is the distinction between the “ivory economcs and its practical applications into the world of domestic politics. Such opinions cannot all be right. But Hayek was obviously deferential to the founder of modern economic theory.
Economic and political swings of the last 80 years have elevated, relegated, and re-elevated both theories. Very readable introduction to Keynes and Hayek.

The author obviously struggled to give Hayek equal billing in this book, despite the vacancy of application, thought and proof in the Austrian’s theories. For these are not dead and dusty debates among professional economists but ongoing skirmishes in an ideological struggle that started in the s — an 80 years’ war with no final victory yet in sight.

Yet everyone recognises this dimension as macro-economic today, even those who are strongly opposed to Keynesian policies for stimulating moderrn regulating effective demand.
That is what would help me understand the economics. They can be considered the friends of Friedrich von Hayek. There is no doubt that some of Keynes innovations in thinking have now been discredited, yet plenty of his classh are still correct. After reading this book I have a completely new appreciation for the body of work of both Keynes and Hayek.

In other words, the market could produce a recovery if most levers of government control were dismantled and competition was restored to the system. Here I suspect that Wapshott didn’t ken the material either.
