For those who don’t know him, James Gurney authored the masterfully illustrated series of Dinotopia books, which show jmes life would be like if humans and dinosaurs lived together in a world much like our own. This book is the answer to my curiosity I have had so far. Here’s what he says about his own book from the introduction: I was encouraged by his use of a variety of strategies including the sketches, models, maquettes, and photo references.
You’ll get to see how he stages the props for reference, sketches and drafts, plenty of commissioned work especially from National Geographicthe bird on his shoulder while he’s drawing, the lousy-art hurney he created from mirrors and other entertaining stuff.
I honestly almost never do, which might explain why my art has been stagnating for 10 years now. The task is to learn to observe the subject accurately and arrange it into a pleasing design.

Because the art vocabulary in English lacks some words to describe key concepts, I have had to invent several terms such as clustering and shapewelding jamse describe compositional principles that artists often think about but lack the vocabulary to talk about. If your an aspiring artst hoping to either get imahinative at paints; see what they can do as a medium; or a pro just hoping to brush up gueney pun intended on what you already know but applied to some new things, this is the book for you.
Other techniques that really struck me are Gurney’s utilization of maquettes to serve as references for his images, which allows him to bring a level kames realism to his lighting and placement that would be difficult to glean from the mind’s eye.
It is one of the BEST books out there on artwork, in preparing your work, researching, designing characters and costumes, compositions, and so on. We had a wonderful time in Toronto earlier this year. You’ll learn about making physical models and dioramas, staging them and lighting them, keeping files of reference materials, expanding your range by limiting your palette, where to find real-world inspiration for fantasy art, plus an absolute barrel-load of Gurney’s work throughout his career.
