For all the terrible pains that Tanne endured, Judith Thurman failed to breathe life into Tanne’s character. Thurman does a very good job of portraying, not only Blixen but her family and friends as well. But these were as nothing beside the sense of failure and loss that marked her eventual return to Denmark.

Well done, Judith Thurman!! When I read in this book how much she uses her family and acquaintances to model the characters in her writings it gave me pause on the story ‘Babette’s Feast’. Usually, she admits, the passion is one-sided.


And beyond it there are vinesen, spaces, grandeurs; there lie wildernesses and battlefields. Thurman does a transcendant job of capturing the spirit of t his woman who lived so large and flaunted the Dinexen upper class conventions and restrictions by living in Afica and simply doing as she pleased after a certain point. Her life had so many difficult times, but she was an extremely hopeful and loving woman.
