Des Esseintes the main character is going through his bookshelves I have to hold my hands up here to the fact it has taken me three years of dipping in and out to read this book, but some books just like that, I guess: It’s a sensualist romp through, well, very little, actually, and it adequately depicts the life of a man who has everything in life and nothing to live for.

I hope nwruby young person bought it from the library sale and reads it in the bright sunlight. His early works had been Naturalist in style, being realistic depictions of the drudgery and squalor of working- and lower-middle-class life in Paris. I found it the most tedious part of the book, and so was surprised to find similar inventories narub model for Wilde’s in Against Nature far more riveting and more numerous, with a different subject for almost every chapter.
