I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, adventure, horror, and zombie gore in the story. So as you can imagine, I had high hopes for this novel. Instead we have to wade through the malevolent zombie circus a wicked idea that should have been the focus of a separate novelcorruption in government and on the police force, organized crime and some sort of radical plot to bring down the walls, all of which involved a host of characters who were introduced and killed off in the blink of an eye.

This is what I expect from all zombie books. Not relevant and added nothing to the story.
Last, but most definitely, not least the undead themselves are varied and interesting instead of simple roving brain eating beasts. It doesn’t feel like the first few days of an outbreak but it doesn’t feel more than months after the start, maybe a few years at most.
Conclusion I pay almost 10 euros for a book for a tradepaperback with only pages and with big letters.

But while the undead are indeed not inside the walls, a group of traveling performers that have embraced the idea of an existence after life that is far nnovel intoxicating, are building an army of the undead whose intent is to come north for a great feast of those hidden behind those walls. David Dunwoody has created a vibrant and creative tale of the undead, fresh with new ideas and yet still unleashing the vast flow of gruesome goodness a fan of zombie fiction craves.
So in Empire, death relinquished his responsibilities and became something not quite human, but not zpmbie immortal. Somehow I felt he was more of just a puny madman than a wicked sorcerer communing with the old gods in a way that would bring down the wrath of Death himself.
Military forces and aid have been withdrawn from the last coastal cities, leaving those who choose to stay in the “badlands” defenseless against hordes of zombified humans and animals.
