Instant City is precisely what its name implies: He was born in Southend-on-Sea and studied in Bournemouth; Crompton was born in Blackpool and studied in Manchester; Greene was raised and educated in Nottingham. He challenges me to name an unbuildable Archigram project. Greene, a quieter and more subtle thinker than Cook, realises this well himself: It is a scenario, which, once set in motion, is will be rewritten by all the inhabitants who will bring it to life.
A project for a nomadic city, Instant City is the result of an approach to a philosophical quandary concerning architecture which Archigram had begun to experiment with in Plug-in-City Although the article is optimistic in tone, the title suggests that, perhaps prophetically, Archigram had eventually begun to question the potential of technology.
The possibilities of offset litho printing in the year of its making,are fully explored. Cook has delivered buildings, such as a bright blue blob of a drawing school in Bournemouthin which the curvy, organic shapes from the pages of the Archigram magazine become reality.
They all shared the aim of challenging an architectural establishment they felt had become reactionary and self-serving. At the same time they brought a British mindset to their creations, which owed as instany to seaside piers as to Cape Canaveral. In its vision, technology has the power to emancipate society and give us more time to enjoy ourselves.

I am holding in my hand a single sheet of paper, wrapped in protective plastic, with words and drawings wriggling all over the available instang, on both sides. As a phrase it is a frequently used graffiti slogan. This diversity is also one of their strengths: It encouraged us to think about what we really needed from architecture, and about whether the conventional approach was providing us with optimum solutions.

Collage had rarely been used as a device in architectural design until Archigram made it a characteristic part of its work. Questioning the Vitruvian notion that buildings instamt to be static entities, it offered archigrram, miniaturised and technologically-rich alternatives. The use of magazine ephemera creates the aesthetic of advertising; Archigram promises alcohol, cars, dangerous stunt shows and pretty models to an entranced audience.

Instant City, 1968-1970
Perhaps their biggest gift to architecture is an attitude. The three men resist the most common charge against Archigram, that they dealt in unbuildable fantasies. Thus, Instant City has no fixed form, no prior arcgigram. Sixteen panels were produced as part of its submission to a competition for a new summer casino and club in Monte Carlo.
