I have always been impressed by their more progressive and enlightened thinking on the issues affecting Arab society. I enjoyed this book a great deal and found its information absolutely fascinating. We read every mjnd, fax, or e-mail we receive, and we will convey your comments to CIA officials outside OPA as appropriate. Weird symbols like apples are substituted for Arabic characters.
This penetrating analysis unlocks the mysteries of Arab society to help us better understand a complex, proud and ancient culture. It is important for intelligence purposes, for example, to attempt to improve the techniques for the measurement of the variance of subgroups of the population from the national character construct.
The first group, for whom ideology matters more than reality, hate this book.

What, if any, utility does the field of national character research have for intelligence? No need to read any books or address any arguments!
Charles Scribners and Sons, New York, I read this book looking to better understand the culture of the Middle East, and it does provide a lot of background cultural information. But the well-researched national character dimension combined with other relevant variables appears to hold considerable potential for improving the assessment of the propensity of a government, elite, or electorate to act in certain directions.
A must-read for anyone who works with Arabs! An Arab man, Patai writes, even if he has four wives, “can have sexual relations with concubines slave girls whom he owns “.

The author looks at the Arabs and the World; Islam and who are the Arabs. The classic study of Arab culture and society.
The result is a collection of outrageously broad – and often suspect – generalisations.
For a detailed anthropological study of the Arab race, Raphael has indeed done a pretty thorough job. Although the Arab countries certainly have their distinctive characteristics, the mlnd that million people, from Morocco to the Gulf, living in mimd villages, urban metropolises and very rarely these days desert tents, think with some sort of single, collective mind is utterly ridiculous. While at times it gets a bit academic, overall, this is an outstanding reference for those trying to gain a better understanding of Arab culture and society and the drivers and influences behind them.

Questions like why Western colonists are hated so much more than the Ottomons who colonized all of the Arab countries far longer, the Arab relationship with modernity, its treatment of women, episodes of sudden and inexplicable emotional outbursts are adequately covered by numerous examples from arabic literature.
This is by far the best book I have seen in English written about my people, the Arabs. Positive characteristics are mentioned, but are given relatively short shrift.
He cannot be criticized for not having used the psychological projection tests because, despite the fact that such tests have been used in a number of national character research works, their validity in such research remains controversial. He is not remotely obsessed with Arab sexual behavior, contrary to occasional criticisms, but he does discuss it, as he should.
This book became a standard text for American foreign service employees after it came out in the s and is responsible for distorting America’s relationship with the Arab world. Dec 23, Adam Glantz midn it did not like it Recommends it for: The Arab mind Close. Contrary to his hopes, though, Arab unity has declined greatly, with the fragmentation of nation-states brought by the Arab Spring, and the rise of crypto-Kharijites like ISIS.
This book is not the absolute last word on the subject, but it is a useful introduction to Arab psychology and culture.
